Graubünden (Switzerland)

Welcome, allegra, benvenuti to Graubünden, Switzerland’s largest holiday region! Graubünden is the home of Heidi. Graubünden is the source of the River Rhine. Graubünden is unadulterated nature. Graubünden is an authentic holiday experience, made unique by the mixture of the three languages German, Italian and Romansh. This musical language can be heard above all in the small but picturesque villages in the Canton of Graubünden.
It is not surprising that there is a tradition of mountaineering on Graubünden’s celebrated peaks: Piz Bernina (4049 m), Piz Palü (3905 m) or Piz Roseg (3937 m). But the average walker is also spoilt for choice with 10,000 kilometres of marked paths, a veritable paradise, whilst the Nordic walker finds countless marked trails.
The way to experience this landscape at its most authentic is in the Swiss National Park (Engadine) or in the new nature reserve of Parc Ela (Savognin).
Rhaetian Railways (www.rhb.ch) and Graubünden’s PostBus (www.postauto.ch/graubuenden) link the mountains and valleys. A journey on one of the panoramic trains (Bernina and Glacier Express, etc.) should find a place on every visitor’s itinerary. The Albula and Bernina routes are candidates for UNESCO World Heritage status. Graubünden and Südtirol are not only linked by the Engadine-Meran Route Express but also by their
common culture, which reaches back to the Old Rhaetians. The “Stairways to Heaven” build bridges between medieval castles, between Romanesque churches and chapels;
they also link historical settlements and cultural landscapes on both sides of the Alpine ridge.
