Bergün/Bravuogn and Filisur
Site Nr. 008
The two highest villages in the Albula Valley, Bergün and Filisur, are among the best preserved historical settlements in Graubünden. They both possess Late Gothic churches with frescoes from the period of construction. The picturesque alleys and squares are lined by buildings for which research has coined the slightly inadequate name of “Engadine houses”. The asymmetry of their façades, which the decoration indefatigably attempts to counterbalance, is due to the disparate heights of the parlours and passages inside. An unmotivated offset or overhang may, however, also point to the integration of their medieval prescursors.
