St. Acalixtus Parish church Brienz/Brinzauls
Site Nr. 006
The parish church of St Acalixtus is enthroned on the church mound of Brienz. It boasts a masterfully carved Late Gothic winged altar-piece, in a coloured frame, from the early 16th century. Inside the richly decorated shrine are carved figures. In the centre stands the patron saint of the bishopric, the Virgin Mary, flanked by two Vestal Virgins. On the right outer side stands the auxiliary saint and protector against the plague, Sebastian; on the left is the patron saint Acalixtus, in papal vestments. His facial features, with their lively, individual expression, in the midst of Late Gothic pinnacles, vines and tracery, already anticipate the Renaissance, approaching from the south.
