Maria-Trost Church in Meran (Untermais)

Site Nr. 014

The Maria-Trost Church (St Mary of Comfort) was originally called the equivalent of “St Mary’s Church” but since the discovery of a picture of the Mother of God with the power to work miracles in 1624, it bears the name St Mary of Comfort. The earliest documentary evidence dates back to the 13th century (records from 1205 and 1211). The earliest finds with a relevance to architectural history can be seen in parts of the Romanesque walls in the nave and tower. Of particular interest to architectural historians are the Romanesque and Gothic frescoes inside the church.
