Our Dear Lady of Bühel in Latsch

Site Nr. 011

The church, visible from a great distance, unite Roman, Gothic and Baroque in an exceptionally solid, yet unusual, style of architecture. The late 12th century tower constitutes the oldest surviving building. The austerity of the exposed brickwork exemplifies the severity of the Roman style, while the quality of the buildings illustrates the elevated status of the commissioner. On inscription on the building testifies to the reconstruction of the wide nave of the church in 1450. The ornately frescoed side chapel with its dome was annexed in 1680. During the 1992 restorations, a menhir figure (3300-2200 BC) was discovered under the wooden altar. This tablet, made from the finest Vinschger marble, is now on display in the church.
