The Church of St Jakob in Söles near Glurns
Site Nr. 004
Söles-Hof and Söles Church are situated on the former path to the Wormser Joch/Umbrail Pass. The earliest mentions were in the years 1220 and 1249. In 1499 the church was torched after the Battle of Calven and in 1570/1580 it was reconstructed as a Gothic church. Excavations revealed surprising results in the form of a previous church from the 6th/7th and 8th centuries. The patronage, however, points to the 9th century. Furthermore, parts of frescoes from the time of the first documentary evidence were found and revealed themselves as pictorial decoration from the previous Romanesque church and of excellent artistic quality.
