St. Romedius, place of pilgrimage in Nonstal

Pyramid-like, the five churches, one built above the other, rise to the sky, linked by a steep staircase with 131 steps. The earliest church was built in c.1000; it was constructed through the efforts of pilgrims who transported the stone to the sacred site. This church is a preRomanesque building with 13th century frescoes in the apse. The paintings are linked with both those in St James’s Church in Kastellaz near Tramin and Hocheppan as well as with St Veit in the Tartscher Bühel and St. Nicholas in Burgeis. On the socle of the oldest Chapel of St Romedius, sea monsters with long fish bodies and human upper bodies are fighting with fish and snakes. There is a clear temporal and spatial relationship to Tramin. The Early Renaissance portal (c. 1000) with Langobard capital decoration is among the earliest examples of stone sculpture in the Trento.
