Tirol Castle in Tirol Village
Site Nr. 009
A castle with a Romanesque core and a two-storeyed chapel (lower chapel 12th and upper chapel 13th century) with foundations of older buildings (either a monastery or a church). the two 12th century portals with rich sculptural ornamentation made of marble from the Vinschgau Valley and Sterzing - represent major works of Romanesque sculpture in the Alpine region. The first portal leads to a hall which around 1200 was decorated in a light reddish shade with white mortar grooves. The portal to the chapel has a three-stepped arch with a dove and eagle on the capitals. The windows of the apse are also clad in profiled marble. The wall paintings in the apse date back to the 14th century. Among the most important parts of the building are the trapezoidal ring wall, the keep, the refectory, the South Palace with a chapel adjoining it and the East Palace.
