Travellers were traversing the Viamala Gorge between Thusis and Zillis in Roman times. The Middle Ages too saw various routes around and through the gorge. Two of the historical routes, the more recent and easier one starting in Thusis and the more arduous, earlier one via Hohen Rätien, have been made accessible again as a part of the Via Spluga cultural and hiking route. The two open galleries, hewn out of the rock in the heart of the gorge, are however so exposed that they can only be viewed from the old Kommerzialstrasse. Guided tours available for individual visitors each Thursday in July and August at 2.00 pm.
